Updated / Square Enix announces Final Fantasy XIII-2

Update: Trailer arrives

Original story: Final Fantasy XIII-2 is official. After being rumored as early as March 2010, Square Enix today confirmed the game at its 1st Production Department Premier press conference in Tokyo. And it’s coming relatively soon.

The title was given a 2011 release window for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Europe and North America get a ‘next winter’ window, which may well mean early 2012.

Little is known about the game, though footage shown at the event showed Lightning with a new, yet-to-be named character. It was also revealed that director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase along with many of XIII‘s development team are back for XIII-2, and that it will feature an “evolved” battle system.

The announcement press release also vaguely promises ‘to exceed Final Fantasy XIII in every aspect’.
