Mass Effect 2 on PS3 wasn’t just a retail release for Sony and EA; the whole game launched on the PlayStation Store day-and-date with boxed copies. Given the lack of marketing put towards the digital edition, surley it didn’t perform too well?
EA CEO John Riccitiello confirmed at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco last week that that wasn’t the case. Mass Effect 2 on PSN has apparently done “very, very well”, despite doing “absolutely nothing” to market the game.
“This was really more about proving it can be done than it was proving what the opportunity would be,” he said. “So an unmarketed game one year after the original was done on the Xbox and the PC, we released the PS3 and managed to do very, very well with it.”
It’s pretty surprising given that the digital version was actually more expensive than what you could find at retail. Perhaps Sony will bring more full games to PSN now.
