Microsoft today rolled out a network testing app called Xbox Live Labs for U.S. Xbox Live users. The program is entirely optional and voluntary, and aims to improve the network functionality of Xbox Live.
According to Microsoft’s Director of Xbox Live Programming Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, the app will not parse your personal data, and will only test the network.
To get in on the action simply log into Xbox Live, head to the community channel, and find the Xbox Live Labs app.
Participating has its (marginal) benefits. If you choose to participate you’ll earn a zero point achievement and one of three Avatar items. However, there are downsides. When the app is running you can’t play games, watch movies, or download music; oh, and your Internet connectivity may be slower than usual.
