Sony wins first round in LG battle, can distribute PS3s again

Sony and LG had their first courtroom battle this week over LG’s claims that Sony were infringing a patent with their Blu-ray technology. The victor? This round goes to Sony, who can now distribute their PS3s across Europe once more.

Some 300,000 PS3s had been seized on their way into Europe. They’re now free to go, while LG has been fined nearly $182,000, with nearly $280,000 added for every day they don’t pay the fine.

LG are still pushing for Sony to pay $2.50 – $2.55 for every Blu-ray player they’ve sold however, so Sony aren’t out of the woods yet. If they get their way, Sony could pay as much as $180 million to the Korean company.
