It would seem Nintendo’s soon-to-launch portable console 3DS might just be one hell of a popular piece of hardware if Amazon.co.uk pre-order numbers are anything to go by. The 3D glasses-free machine has just broken records, with pre-ordered units surpassing those of Sony’s PlayStation 3 when it launched back in March ’07.
Any actual numbers on how many units of the 3DS are on the move have gone unspecified as of yet. However, it would seem the portable has a 56 percent more pre-orders than the PS3, and a whopping 255 percent more than what the DSi managed back in 2009.
“It’s unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch,” said Chris Poad, Amazon’s director of videogames. “Such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year’s Microsoft Kinect.”
It’s been reported that around 185,000 3DS consoles have been shipped to the UK, which are expected to be enough to prevent any shortages of it. We’ll just wait another week and see if that’ll be the case.
