EA goes green

EA has officially declared an end to printed manuals shipping with their games, opting for digital “in-game” manuals instead of the outdated paper alternatives, their PR announced today. It is part of an ongoing “green” initiative the company has been working on over the past year, which also includes cutting down emissions output during the production process by using Reduced Material DVD Style Cases (RMCs) for PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and PC-DVD retail products, as well as recycled elements in their slimmed-down shipping materials.

Printed manuals have been slimmed down since earlier this year with Fight Night Champion for PS3/360, as well as the recent release of Mass Effect 2 for the PS3. The on-disc manuals can be accessed via “pause” and “menu” screens, but considering most games have very intuitive tutorials to help guide players through the mechanics, is this really much of a surprise?
