Wii successor won’t be 3D-enabled, says Nintendo

Just this week Nintendo released the glasses-free 3DS, the latest in the DS family of portables. However, moving forward, Nintendo says it’s unlikely it’ll incorporate 3D into its next home console.

In an interview with CNN, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said: “Glasses-free is a big deal. We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it.”

Further, another Nintendo director and producer, Hideki Konno, said the reason Nintendo wants to distance itself from 3D with its next console is because glasses are still required.

“I think at Nintendo, we realise that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work,” Konno said. “In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D.”
