Update: Rumor: Split/Second 2 canned, studio cutting staff

Possibly tough times for Disney-owned Split/Second developer Black Rock Studio; an anonymous source has told Eurogamer that, according to internal rumors, there will be voluntary redundancies at the UK-based studio today.

The development house is believed to be downsized to a single game team, with 40 souls to be let go.

Since mid-December, the source also says, half of Black Rock has been sitting around doing nothing: “It seems Disney have been unable to provide us with a project to work on, and our concept pitches clearly haven’t gone down well (despite there being many of them).”

Among the projects turned down were a sequel to 2008’s Pure. Disney’s new freemium-minded management also canned Split/Second 2. The game was in pre-production.

A “good proportion” of the studio is said to be working on a project though, a “promising” and “new and risky” one at that.

Update: The source has provided a clarification. “Around 100 jobs are at risk,” not 40.
