During the recent Activision Blizzard conference call, the Blizzard side of the operation announced record profits despite seeing a small decline in subscriptions to its juggernaut MMO World of Warcraft. One of the factors attributed in putting WoW in a minor decline was the recent release of RIFT, which has been fairly successful at enticing players.
During the call, Blizzard head honcho Mike Morhaime was asked about how he felt about RIFT, to which he responded: “What we have seen in the past is we tend to see our players leave for some period of time, try out the new MMOs, and then a good percentage of them historically have come back to World of Warcraft. So far, I haven’t seen anything to indicate this will be different.”
Fortunately for Blizzard history is certainly on their side as the sentiment uttered by Morhaime seems to have rung true for the past several years. Obviously only time will tell if WoW is in any real decline or if RIFT has just been another blip on the map in WoW‘s history.
