Namco envisions Ridge Racer to take NFS-like form

Ridge Racer Unbounded is moving away from the traditional series formula of super-slidey arcade racing, offering a more serious approach to the franchise. But don’t write off the classic gameplay just yet; it’s publisher Namco Bandai’s intention is to mold the games into a Need for Speed-like model, covering different types of racing across different games.

Product manager Kevin Chadine put this idea forward at Namco’s recent event in Dubai. Developer Bug Bear’s own Laasko Jonaas added that he hopes the traditional series continues, to which Chadine said: “This is just a different branch.”

To the question of its Ridge Racer was becoming its own brand he replied: “That’s the overall concept, yeah.”

Unbounded is set for release next year.
