Sucker Punch on using Sony catalogue as inspiration

As the developers on Infamous, Sucker Punch have made a home in the hearts of many a PS3 fan. But like any good developer, the team want to do better with the upcoming Infamous 2, taking that home and building it into a mansion with swimming pools and home cinemas.

To do that, they’ve taken inspiration from their other PS3-exclusive colleagues. It’s not always an easy task, but it pays off as producer Brian Fleming revealed to CVG. He said: “I think the Sony exclusive games are held to a high bar by players and by Sony. It’s not an easy space to play in.

“We find games like Uncharted, Resistance and LittleBigPlanet to be inspirations for us. We look at those games and say, ‘We have to be better.'”

Of the games listed, Uncharted is easily the most critically acclaimed, “We looked at Uncharted 2 and we said, ‘Our graphics and rendering have to be vastly better,'” Fleming continued. “Hopefully we’ve done a great job of that.”

But the team also looked at specific elements of unique franchises like LittleBigPlanet:  “We looked at LittleBigPlanet and we said, ‘That’s a great [example of] how we can be better as a game.'”

“So we’re constantly inspired by them and hopefully some of the things we’re doing here make us part of that now and we’ll hopefully inspire them to do things too.

“But for us, really, they set a high bar and we feel lucky to be in that company. We still have a lot to learn and a lot to improve.”

Infamous 2 is less than a month away for the US, touching down on June 7. No date yet for the EU but it will hopefully be as close as possible.
