Stranger’s Wrath was one of the best games never played thanks to EA’s “crappy job distributing it back in the day,” says Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning.
“Stranger was the best game we ever made,” Lanning told Eurogamer, “[but] it was sabotaged. When you see a big game coming out, just ask what the marketing budget is. If you decide as a publisher not to give it a marketing budget, you decide its fate.”
In the case of Stranger’s Wrath, that fate was a dismally poor performance due to lack of exposure and distribution. “As soon as we understood there was no marketing budget, we had zero expectations,” said Lanning of the critically acclaimed, commercially overlooked title. “We had zero incentive to build another game for them, either.” Well, the important thing is that Lanning’s not bitter!
Developer Just Add Water’s is remaking Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, to be released on the PlayStation Network later this summer with talks of an Xbox Live version underway.
