Sure enough, those previous hints of Kinect-powered Avatars coming soon to Xbox Live were right on schedule. Microsoft has officially unveiled “Avatar Kinect,” a service that will let you control your Xbox Live Avatar’s expressions through Kinect’s facial recognition technology. Come spring, real-life smiles, frowns, laughs and voices can easily be rendered through your Avatar. Interactions are not just limited to you and your Avatar mini-me, though.
Microsoft dubs it “a new Xbox Live social experience” that will allow for up to seven avatars to gather and interact in 15 different settings from tailgate parties and talk show sets to magical forests.
Xbox Live GM Pete Thompson called the service “just the beginning” and one that “has tremendous headroom for future innovation from Microsoft and its partners.”
