IGN selling Direct2Drive to Gamefly — report

Direct2Drive, the online videogame distribution service owned by IGN Entertainment, is being sold off to the rental firm Gamefly, according to sources of MCVUK.

Gamefly uses the Netflix subscription template of renting discs through the mail (in this case videogames as opposed to movies) for a monthly fee, whereas Direct2Drive is a digital content delivery system and a direct competitor to Valve’s popular Steam service. Direct2Drive also recently began a digital game rental service along with their standard service, which would tie-in with Gamefly’s mail offering.

There is no official word on the acquisition from either party, though sources close to MCV say the deal is almost complete.
