It hasn’t been too long since we’ve heard of the Ghost Recon franchise. Just earlier this month we learned that there’s no chance for the oft-delayed Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to release this year; it is now a first-quarter 2012 release. So not good news.
Today’s a bit different though; Ubisoft has announced a new addition to the series, a free-to-play, Ubisoft Singapore-developed cover-based third-person shooter called Ghost Recon Online.
The studio has quite a few boxes ticked, too. The game brings a selection of three classes, customizable weapons, premium content for those who wish to “fully personalize their experience,” and a preceding closed beta which will kick off this summer (head to ghostrecononline.com to sign up).
Sounds like EA’s Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield F4P will be close competitors.
There’s no final launch date yet, but the announcement did come complete with assets. Grab the first character renders and screenshots here, and have a look at the debut in-game trailer here.
