The co-op multiplayer Horde Mode in Gears of War 2 was quite an attraction in itself. The knuckle-clenching thrill of surviving ever tougher waves of baddies through teamwork and tactics has meant that several games since have looked over the shoulder of the brawny shooter and added their own similar attraction.
The Official Xbox Magazine has talked to the Gears developers in a big feature going out with next issue, and they have been nice enough to divulge some of what the Horde Mode can offer in the upcoming Gears of War 3.
“Watching the Gears 2 community, Epic noticed the tactics of the best teams: they’d hole up in a corner of the map, rigging defences out of Boomshields to defend against the steadily tougher waves of oncoming Locust,” the articles states.
Taking this as a jumping-off point, Epic has added lots of new ways to build up your defenses. These include varying bases, resource generation, Lancer turrets, cardboard Cole Trains to lure the enemy, and laser fences. The result is “half Gears, half Company of Heroes,” according to the article.
You’ll need this stuff, because the Locusts are coming on bigger and stronger than ever. Expect Berserkers and even Brumaks to make appearances, often when you least expect them.
You earn up cash from kills that you share between players. Reviving isn’t free anymore, and you’ll be able to buy big defensive machinery like the Silverback Mech – “the ultimate weapon” according to executive producer Rod Fergusson.
Gears of War 3 is coming to an Xbox near you on September 20th.
