Future models of Xbox 360’s ‘slim’ design will ship with system-on-a-chip architecture, Microsoft has announced.
The new approach integrates GPU (graphics processor), CPU (main processor), memory, and I/O logic into a single chip, allowing for lower manufacturing costs, improved heat management and power efficiency, and considerably reduced motherboard sizes. Improvements all around then.
Compatibility issues with older software are said to be nonexistent, that thanks to a latency and bandwidth that will imitate the older system.
No news on when consoles carrying the chip are expected to hit shelves just yet though.
