Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii U not happening

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on Wii U is not in the cards, Nintendo has confirmed.

Unlike 2006’s Twilight Princess, which released on both the GameCube and the then-new Wii, Skyward Sword will be sticking to a Wii-only release.

According to Nintendo of America boss man Reggie Fils-Aime, a dual-platform release won’t be happening “because Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was built to be played with a Wii controller,” whereas Wii U will only support MotionPlus-enabled Wiimotes.

Chances are Wii U will get its own adventure down the line though. It wouldn’t be a proper Nintendo system without a Zelda game, after all. For now, all we have are a few glimpses of a possible HD Zelda title that were shown in the console’s reveal montage. Of those scenes, Fils-Aime says: “We showed what Link might look like in a 1080p environment, and it got people pretty excited.”

Skyward Sword is out this holiday.
