Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, the co-founders of Team Meat and the development duo behind Super Meat Boy, have said they are currently working on their next title but refused to go into any further detail. What the pair would tease is the next game’s design: it will be “a bit more experimental” because they felt Super Meat Boy was a “very straightforward game” and they “didn’t really reach outside the box in terms of design.”
“I think it’s going to be more ambitious design-wise and it’s going to be more of a challenge for us,” said McMillen. “It’s a bigger project. It’s going to be fun and that’s exactly why we’re into it. It’s going to be pretty fresh.”
With Super Meat Boy beginning life as just Meat Boy, a Flash project, then moving over to Xbox Live Arcade and PC, there’s a question as to where this new game will show up. McMillen squashes any speculation – for now – by saying the new project will be approached the same way as Meat Boy, with Team Meat set to “make a game and if it works on whatever system it works on then good, but we’re not designing this game with a specific system in mind.”
I can’t wait to see what this new game turns out to be. With Super Meat Boy still causing me to buy new controllers on occasion, it will be wonderful to see what Team Meat came come up with next. Maybe, in my dream of dreams, this project will be the return of the long silent Hitlers Must Die.
