So while everyone’s wanting to see Uncharted or Mass Effect movies, it seems some Hollywood producers are more interested in gaming’s oldies getting a slice of the adaptation pie. Case in point: Space Invaders.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and Gigi Pritzker are the driving force behind this out-of-nowhere adaptation. di Bonaventura is treading comfortable waters having been a producer for recent film versions of other 80’s pop culture staples G.I. Joe and Transformers. Pritzker is part of production company Odd Lot Entertainment, and is the producer for the upcoming Ender’s Game film, an adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s space sci-fi novel. Currently, the two have optioned the rights for the film, and are seeking out a writer for the script.
Seems like a simple enough formula for a fun movie. Cover the core gameplay in one action scene where a ship or mobile turret (No, really, what IS that thing?) moves left and right shooting five rows of invading aliens, cover the familiar Hollywood territory of “stop the invasion,” throw in some other fun action bits, give it a little 80’s charm, and you’re set. How they will mess this up, only time will tell.
