Star Wars in hella-popular, who knew; publisher EA has said that its upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic has already set pre-order records for the company.
Through the first five days, the BioWare MMO is now the game to beat.
“I’m not going to give you an actual number yet on the pre-orders,” EA Games Label head Frank Gibeau said during an earnings call yesterday. “I want to get through the first week and all the telemetry come in. But in general, the pre-order numbers are ahead of our expectations on Star Wars.”
The publisher started taking the pre-orders last Thursday.
As for a release date? “As we get through the bulk of the summer, we’re going to be ramping up our beta campaign. And by the time we get to around September, we’ll be in a position to be able to really call the ball and give you the hard ship date.”
DICE’s upcoming Battlefield 3 is also a big pre-order success. It has outdone last year’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 by a factor of 10.
Analyst firm Cowen & Company previously said that the shooter’s pre-orders are on par with last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. It’s expected to sell 11 million copies in the first year.
