The source code of the Doom 3 engine will soon be open source and free for all to tamper with; id Software’s John Carmack announced the news during his annual keynote at Quake Con yesterday.
The code guru said to expect it after the launch of Rage this October but before the end of the year. No exact dates yet.
Releasing the code is “a challenge to other developers,” Carmack noted, while being beneficial to both id and the community.
At last year’s con, two of id’s previous releases, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, were opened up as well.
