In the nine months it’s been available, Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold over 18 million map packs, doubling the sales of Treyarch’s previous entry into the franchise; World at War sold 9 million in the same timeframe.
Modern Warfare 2 sold 11 million in 9 months, so there’s massive year over year growth there.
Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg announced the news at a recent investor event, saying the average Black Ops player has spent $76 on the title, an 18 percent increase over the game’s retail price.
Consumer engagement is at an “all time high,” the exec also said: “There are over 30 million unique players of Black Ops who collectively have amassed, incredibly, more than 2.3 billion hours of play. To put that number in perspective, that’s more than a quarter of a million years of play and that means our millions of fans spend more time per day on Black Ops multiplayer than they do on Facebook.”
The series’ next entry, Modern Warfare 3, is out this November.
