50% of Black Ops maps remain unreleased

Only half of the Call of Duty: Black Ops maps that reached the development phase were ever released, Treyarch’s revealed.

The mini revelation was made during the studio’s Call of Duty XP panel last week which discussed the level creation process.

One of the unreleased maps shown during was War Museum, a recreation of World at War‘s Castle map. This particular one didn’t see release because the developer decided against adding content from previous games.

Some Black Ops maps took a year to develop, it was also revealed. The reason being: “Call of Duty level designers are three-part designers: one part artist, one part architect, and completely insane,” according to senior game designer Phillip Tasker.

Insanity pays though. It was announced last week that Black Ops‘ map packs have sold over 18 million units so far.
