Last year, EA Sports thrilled basketball fans by bringing the arcade classic NBA Jam back to consoles. This January, they’ll do the same for football fans with the resurrection of NFL Blitz on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN.
EA Sports general manager of American football Cam Weber said in a statement, “NFL Blitz was one of the great arcade classics of the 90s, and now we’re bringing back everything fans loved at a great price, in high-definition and as a digital download. The new NFL Blitz will preserve the competitive nature of the original game, while delivering to fans the ultimate rivalry experiences online.”
Just like in the 1997 arcade game, NFL Blitz will feature over-the-top tackling animations, 7-on-7 football, no penalties and 30 yards for a first down. This time around, players will be able to compete online in HD at 60 frames per second. There’s also a Blitz Gauntlet mode that lets solo players climb the ladder Mortal Kombat-style while defeating and unlocking “fantasy character bosses.”
We’re not sure how well fantasy bosses and NFL football go together, but regardless of that, arcade sports fans should be psyched to see another old favorite being brought to the present day by EA Sports. NFL Blitz will cost 1200 points on Xbox Live Arcade and $14.99 on PSN when it is released this January.
