As a television series, Game of Thrones (based on author George R. R. Martin’s best-selling fantasy novels) has seen a tremendous success since its pilot episode aired earlier this year. In wake of that, someone thought it would be a good idea to make a game out of it, the outcome of which obviously fell short of anything the TV series had accomplished; A Game of Thrones: Genesis never rose to the occasion, adding yet another title to the never-ending list of franchises that shouldn’t go cross-medium.
Not settling for such a loss, it’s now been announced that three new games are planned and in development for a 2012 release based on the franchise. The first one is an RPG which will be developed by Cyanide — the same studio behind A Game of Thrones: Genesis — and published by Atlus. It’ll be based on an original story by author George R. R. Martin and will be developed in collaboration with HBO to parallel the TV series. It will be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
The second game in the works comes from Battlestar Galactica Online developer Bigpoint, which is working on a free-to-play MMORPG based on the franchise, while an as of yet unknown developer is currently working on a third game aimed for release on social networks. Which ones have gone unmentioned, but we all know which the popular ones are.
2012 is not far off, so expect further info to become available quite soon.
