Modern Warfare 3 has had the series best launch yet; the shooter has sold 6.5 million units in the first 24 hours, and that in the US and UK alone. That’s $400 million in revenues, allowing Activision to once more boast about setting new entertainment launch records.
Those are still “estimated” figures though, based on “Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.”
To compare, Black Ops‘ did $360 million’s worth of business last year in the same time frame, while Modern Warfare 2 brought in $310 in 2009.
“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick says.
“Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Lord of the Rings,’ two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
