December NPDs: Xbox 360, Modern Warfare 3 the year’s biggest sellers

The latest NPD data paints a grim picture of the industry in the US. December sales were down with the month accounting for 23% of annual sales (10yr average has been 28%) and year-over-year revenues down to $3.99 billion, a decline of 21%.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 were an exception though. Both consoles’ sales saw a bump of 5% with the 360 accounting for “nearly 40% of annual 2011 new physical retail sales across all categories,” making it the best-selling console of the year.
