Yet another free-to-play success story here; Sony Online Entertainment’s Everquest II has increased its player count by as much as 300% following a move to a freemium model.
Developer president John Smedley said as much on Twitter: “We are seeing some amazing growth in EverQuest II. [There’s been a] 40 per cent increase in daily logins since going free-to-play and a 300 per cent increase in new players.
“And we’ve seen a 200 per cent increase in item sales. Plus we have added a lot of new subs. All during the time that some really good competition hit the market.”
Wonder what he means by “really good competition”, eh?
The MMO made the move to free-to-play a month ago. There’s plenty of opportunity to go premium though, with both silver and gold accounts available. Will Star Trek Online see similar success when it goes F2P next week?
