Overall videogame sales dropped 14 percent this December from 2010-and it’s all the Wii’s fault. The Wii’s software sales dropped 42 percent overall, which is a massive amount by anyone’s standards. This pulled down the gains of Xbox and PS3, both rising 9 percent.
These less than stellar numbers have led Nintendo to project a net loss for the year-the first time since 1981. That’s a 30 year run of steady gains. Well played, Nintendo.
I fully expect these figures to be cannon fodder in various “iOS: The Future of Gaming” articles. But with the Wii U right around the corner, chances are extremely high that these numbers will drastically change next year. In other words, Nintendo isn’t going anywhere soon.
