Miyamoto and Nintendo need “one big hit”

Just what is legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto doing with his time at the moment? More Mario? Developing Donkey Kong? Making Metroid? Z– uh, okay nothing for Zelda.

Well, none of those things, it would seem. Instead he’s working on finding “one big hit” for Nintendo to revel in. Company investors heard as much from him during a Q&A between himself and Ninty boss Satoru Iwata (via IGN).

“I am spending more time than before on finding new ideas for new developments rather than focusing my energy on work in my (development) teams in order to solidify the contents of (existing) franchise titles,” Miyamoto revealed. “After all, developing big hit titles must be the solution. I am acting with the understanding that one big hit title can change multiple phases of a situation in the entertainment business, and I feel that finding such one big hit is my basic job.”

Could we be on the brink of seeing a new Nintendo franchise on the same scale as Zelda and Mario? We’ve known since earlier this month that Miyamoto is working on something original. The whole industry waits eagerly for just what that is.
