Rift gets Lite, free-to-play version

Trion Worlds has cleverly set up a free-to-play version of the MMO Rift without actually ever using the words free, to, or play.

Rift Lite, as its called, offers players the first 20 levels of character progression free of charge, with no time limit either. When will it hit? Well, today, actually, as part of the 1.7 Carnival of the Ascended patch.

Also included in said patch are PvP improvements, the new River of Souls Chronicle (what?) and Ascended Weddings (what?!) as well as a host of other tweaks and fixes.

So, that’s Rift down; will The Old Republic offer up a F2P option soon?
