Drew Karpyshyn, the penman behind such famed gaming narratives as the Baldur’s Gate series, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and the Mass Effect series, has announced on his personal blog that he is retiring not only from his home company of BioWare, but from the entire games industry as well.
“For the past twelve years I’ve had the privilege to work at one of the best companies in the video game industry, side by side with the most talented and incredible group of people I’ve ever had the good fortune to know,” said Karpyshyn. “I’ve enjoyed my time at BioWare immensely, but it’s time for me to move on.”
Karpyshyn noted that “the parting was completely amicable, and 100% my decision.”
As for what the future holds for the writer, Karpyshyn says that his leaving the games industry opens up the way for him to work on his novels and other non-gaming projects, including the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, and Children of Fire, which Karpyshyn describes as “the first novel in my original fantasy series, which I’ve been perpetually working on for almost a decade.”
“I’ll always have fond memories of BioWare, and a great appreciation for everything it meant to me. But my future is wide open, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store. (Plus, now I’ll have more time for golf.)” Amen to that. We wish Karpyshyn the best of luck in whatever the future may hold for him.
