Just days before their launch of Syndicate, the modern FPS reboot of the classic PC tactical shooter series, Swedish developer Starbreeze Studios has confirmed 25 staff members have been laid off after completing the title for publisher EA.
In addition to these layoffs, longtime chairman of Starbreeze’s board of directors Peter Tornquist has announced his resignation from the company.
The shrinkage represents a bit of a trend for the guys most famous for being behind The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick titles, as the developers have slowly been cutting employees since early last year, when they initially had a staff of around 120. Before this series of layoffs, the studio employed 93 workers (thanks, Gamasutra).
“It is sad that we are forced to make staff cutbacks affecting employees. But we have to reduce staff after the final delivery of Syndicate,” said CEO Mikael Nermark in a chat with Gamesindustry.biz.
