Alan Wake sells 2 million, is a “cult classic” — Remedy

In an interview with the guys over at CVG, Remedy Entertainment head of franchise development Oskari Häkkinen confirmed that the original Alan Wake has sold over two million copies across the Xbox 360 and PC.

Häkkinen termed the series as something of a “cult classic” when referencing the title’s general success. “People who have played and enjoyed the story feel the urge to tell their friends and other gamers out there that they need to try this experience, they need to play it,” he said.

This, of course, is all very good news for fans of the third-person franchise. When asked if the series’ reception means that the franchise has a future ahead of it, Häkkinen says: “Yeah, I think so. Alan Wake is definitely very close to our hearts. It’s our IP – we own it. It’s not something that we’re going to forget very easily.”

Just last month, we reported that the PC edition of Alan Wake was a smashing success, recouping its development costs in just two days.

As the originators of the hugely successful Max Payne franchise, Remedy could have easily rested on their laurels and kept Alan Wake as a one-off deal. It’s refreshing, then, to see a studio commit themselves to an entirely new IP that it has put all its passion into making. It may be just as refreshing to see audiences en masse reward Remedy for their work, and largely enjoy it while doing so.
