Portal 2 the big winner at BAFTAs

Another rendition of the British Academy Video Game Awards has come and gone, with Portal 2 bringing home the biggest bacon this go-round. Valve’s puzzler took home three awards, including honors for Best Story, Best Design, and the coveted Best Game award.

Battlefield 3 had a good showing as well, notching victories for Best Online Multiplayer, Audio Achievement, and the publicly voted GAME award. The GAME award win may be doubly sweet for the folks over at DICE, as the Call of Duty franchise had held the title for the past three years. People seem to really enjoy shooting stuff, apparently.

Other solid performances include Batman: Arkham City, which racked up wins in the Best Action and Best Performer (for Mark Hamill’s turn as the Joker) categories, and LittleBigPlanet 2, which took home the Best Family Game and Innovation awards.

This year’s Special award went to Markus “Notch” Persson, perhaps better known as the creator of Minecraft. Upon receiving the award, Persson said, “There’s room for innovation now… If I can be a small part of making games innovative again, I’m happy to do that.”

In terms of potential surprises, some may be shocked to see zero wins each for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Despite having a combined 13 nominations total, victory was just not in the cards for the two blockbuster titles.

This year’s BAFTAs were held in London, with Irish comedian and television presenter Dara Ó Briain serving as host for the fourth consecutive year.
