You would think that a studio as small as Runic Games — at least when compared to the might of Blizzard — would be intimidated and humbled now that its action-RPG Torchlight II (set for a “2012” release) has a heavy-weight competitor waiting around the next corner, that being Diablo III. Two games vastly different from one another, yet so very similar. Yeah, you can see how one could crumble in fear by the comparison.
That said, Runic is not letting the news get to them. In fact, the studio is looking forward to, A: Playing Diablo III, and B: Getting Torchlight II ready and out the door, as the team seems indifferent to how the situation was when it began development of the first game. In response to concerned fans, the developers wrote: “Congratulations to the Diablo III team for announcing a release date! That’s got to be a such a feeling of relief to be on the home stretch. We’re excited to hear the news, and we can’t wait to play.
“To our fans: We know a lot of you are worried about us. We’ve heard what you’re saying, and sure we’ve had similar discussions. But we began making the first Torchlight in 2008 when development on Diablo III was already underway. We didn’t let that be a reason that we couldn’t make an RPG. We made the commitment to create a game we loved to play. That’s what’s important to us, and that’s why we go to work every day.”
