Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced that the company’s new system will give consumers looking to purchase Wii U software the option to choose between physical and digital from day one.
This news, which comes from an investor’s conference, follows new information that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will release in an identical fashion on the 3DS this August. The first of its kind from the publisher, the game will be available in traditional retail form and as a digital purchase onto the SD card. This marks a major departure for Nintendo, which has generally remained traditional in its approach to software distribution.
The new console is set to release in Q4 of this year, but the upcoming E3 conference should yield much more concrete details.
