Dylan Jobe, boss man of Starhawk developer Lightbox, has made quite the announcement over at the PS Blog today; all — as in, all — map packs for Starhawk will be free, forever and ever.
The decision was made after DLC for the studio’s previous release, Warhawk, fractured the player base. This is not a situation the developer wants to repeat with Starhawk.
“Whenever we release a map pack you won’t have to pay a friggin’ dime!” a clearly excited Jobe screams. “And we’ve already started the early stages of our next map pack for you guys.”
The man also teased some of that content, taking place on the planet Cypress — “a lush, swampy world that’s home to an abandoned research facility that many years ago was responsible for researching the mysteries of Rift Energy” — with the concepts below.
All very exciting stuff, though paid post-launch content will still play a role. “Now certainly we’ll have some paid DLC content in the future as well as our free map packs, but we’re still playing around with what that will be,” Jobe says. “We’re going to be looking to see what the player feedback is on Starhawk in the coming weeks to help steer the DLC that we develop for you all. This is our commitment to all of you, the players.”
