Looks like the handheld space isn’t completely dying just yet. As of May 20, Nintendo has sold 6,017,206 units in Japan according to Famitsu magazine courtesy of Kotaku.
Over 13.35 million units were sold globally by March 31, 2012, raising the lifetime sales of the 3DS to 17.1 million since its launch in Japan on February 26, 2011.
This comes as great news for Nintendo, especially after the rather lukewarm reception of the 3DS in the UK when compared to its predecessor. Nintendo expects to start making money off of each 3DS sold by the end of September 2012. Cue the trumpets and confetti.
