Want free-to-play on Wii U? Go for it

Free-to-play is a welcome business model on Wii U, says busy interviewee Satoru Iwata. As will microtransactions and downloadable content.

“We have designed the system from a technical standpoint to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free to play and micro transactions,” said Iwata in a recent investor Q&A.

Don’t go expecting the next Mario to be a F2P title though, as Nintendo itself has no plans to jump on that particular train. “Currently, we are not actively looking at free to play for our first-party content and I don’t think that’s a direction that we should go in right now,” Iwata said.

Never say never though: “But that doesn’t mean for the future that there may not come a time where we have specific content that might be suited to that model.”
