During Nintendo’s recent Direct broadcast, company president Satoru Iwata revealed that Namco Bandai is developing the majority of the next Super Smash Bros. game.
The series’ latest installment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, was itself the product of many different development studios, so this announcement isn’t unprecedented. Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai is still at the helm for this new game, and his team, Sora, will have substantial involvement. The game, which was originally announced at E3 2011, will be developed for both Wii U and 3DS.
Many of Namco Bandai’s top assets are on the job, like Yoshito Higuchi of Tales fame, Masaya Kobayashi, and many of the developers behind SoulCalibur and Tekken. In a statement made late last night, Sakurai explained that the team has already created a prototype, despite work on the game having just recently begun.
