Wii U online may not be completely free after all

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced last week that the Wii U will not adopt an online subscription model. While this part of his statement is still true, he has also come out to say that Nintendo cannot promise all online services will be free.

The plan is to consider charging online users looking for more online features, not ordinary services. There is no information at this time about what exactly would be considered “extra” online features.

“We cannot promise here that Nintendo will always provide you with online services free of charge no matter how deep the experiences are that it may provide,” Iwata said, speaking to shareholders. “But at least we are not thinking of asking our consumers to pay money to just casually get access to our ordinary online services.”

Iwata went on to add that given the wide variety of customers Nintendo has to cater for, having a service that asks users to obtain membership is not always the best option.
