Project Sora, the studio behind 3DS title Kid Icarus: Uprising has been disbanded, according to the studio’s website. The website states that the closure occurred on June 30, with the website itself set to shut down by July 31. There has been no official word from Nintendo or Project Sora about why the studio is closing.
The studio was formed in 2009 by Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Kid Icarus: Uprising will be the only title released by this studio. It was rumored that when the Wii U and 3DS Smash Bros titles were announced back at E3 in 2011, Project Sora would be making the two games. Last month’s announcement that Namco Bandai would be developing the next Smash Bros. games seems likely as to why the studio is closing. Sakurai will still be creatively in charge of future Smash Bros. development.
It is always sad when a studio closes its doors, let us hope that all the employees are being reassigned within Nintendo.
