Another victory for video games as art

The perpetual argument about video games being artistic expression has come across a couple victories in the past few years. Games like Shadow of The Collosus, Okami, and El Shaddai have been beautiful representations of this idea, and the art world has taken notice. From July 29th – November 5th 2012, gaming takes another leap forward.

One of the most unique titles in gaming history, Katamari Damacy, will be entering the New York Museum of Modern Art via the “Century of the Child: Growing By Design” exhibit. Carlson Choi speaks of this achievement. ” The inclusion of Katamari Damacy in this ground breaking exhibit is a testament to the creative designs embodied in NAMCO BANDAI’s games and shows the importance of video games in peoples’ lives in addition to being a validation of video games as a modern form of interactive art.”

This particular exhibit is the first large scale overview with a children specific focus on progressive thinking as the highlight. Many underrepresented topics will be covered and Katamari Damacy will be within an area focusing on toys and game design.
