Rise of the Triad announced, playable at QuakeCon

A modern day follow-up to the 1995 classic FPS Rise of the Triad is to be released by year end according to an announcement  made today at QuakeCon by Apogee Software and Interceptor Entertainment.

The game will utilize the Unreal Engine 3 to bring modern graphics to the quirky classic. Machinima has posted the first trailer on YouTube which can be seen here, and from the looks of things, a comparison of Castle Wolfenstein meets mind altering drugs comes to mind. Looks interesting, to say the least. There seems to be a definite focus on intense albeit unrealisitic action.

Apogee was apparently waiting until they found a reliable developer to work on the release, and Terry Nagy, co-founder and Chief Creative Officer spoke a bit the return of the franchise.

“We were seeking a strong, independent, hard-working development partner to herald the eagerly-anticipated return of ‘Rise of the Triad’,” said Nagy. “We have indeed found that partner in Interceptor Entertainment.”

“Apogee has given us a great opportunity with Rise of the Triad,” said Interceptor CEO Frederik Schreiber.  “We are all about fast-paced action and this was simply a perfect match for us as fans of old school shooters.”

The game is expected to be released near the end of the year, and will be distributed via Steam. Having often heard about, but never played the original, this is my introduction to the series. The game will be playable at QuakeCon, and fans will be able to meet the team behind the game and ask questions. There will be playable single player and multiplayer content available for testing.
