During the Eurogamer Expo 2012 today, Hideo Kojima shed some light on more details regarding Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes by first telling us that the base system from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would be returning.
“The concept of developing weapons at your base is a very cool idea, and something that could be popular. It’s something we’ve been thinking of.” said Kojima.
You will be able to access your base via helicopter when going from world to world and upon arriving, you can actually walk around inside and explore it, as well as upgrade it like you could in Peace Walker. Pretty cool, huh?
Kojima also went on to talk about how Smartphones and other electronic devices would play a role in managing and improving your base even when you are away from your game.
“Furthermore, nowadays there are various ways to access the game world – you’re not just playing in your living room on your games console. You may also access through your cell phone and other devices and still access that same game. I think in that respect that motherbase system lends itself very well to that system, and that’s something we’re planning on for Ground Zeroes.”
It wasn’t all about Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes though. He also touched on Metal Gear Online. Admittedly, it seems Japan took more of a liking to the game than the Western audience did.
“Of course, I’m the one who came up with the original concept for Metal Gear Online and supervised it, but I left development to my staff, and of course they were Japanese, so the systems were very much targeted to Japanese users, which is why it was very popular in Japan.”
After this, he hinted at the idea of bringing Metal Gear Online back in the future by learning from his mistakes of Metal Gear Online in North America. He plans on working with his newly formed branch for Kojima Productions in L.A. to try and make the next project more enjoyable for the Western audience.
“We’re always looking forward to what’s coming next, and I think the next time we make an online game, we’re wanting it to be more popular in North America and Europe.”
