Hooray for literature! 2K Games and Irrational Games announced today that BioShock Infinite is getting a bit of intriguing back story. An e-book prequel will be available worldwide on the Amazon Kindle beginning February 12th, for $3 (free if you pre-order BioShock Infinite through Amazon). Named BioShock Infinite: Mind in Revolt, this tale provides information about Columbia, the mysterious city in the sky. This book is written by people who know the world of Columbia in and out: Irrational Games writer Joe Fielder and perfect facial hair creative director Ken Levine (who I have personally shook hands with twice, so that remark was not an exaggeration). Fielder remarks: “Since we first announced BioShock Infinite, our fans have asked for more information about Columbia and the complex cast of characters that inhabit the floating city. After reading the e-book, players will have a better understanding of BioShock Infinite’s world, the struggle between its factions, and the motivations of key characters, like rebel leader Daisy Fitzroy, without spoiling the mysteries of BioShock Infinite.”
That’s not all; gamers the world over who pre-order the game also get access to the Industrial Revolution Pack for free. This pack gives players exclusive dibs on 3 gear items that improve your combat ability, 500 extra in-game currency (which I hope will be named Shocklings), 5 lock picks (hey Jill Valentine, WHO IS THE MASTER OF UNLOCKING NOW?!), and an Industrial Revolution puzzle game for Facebook that unlocks stories about Columbia and allows users to pick a faction to side with: the Founders or the Vox Populi (I have a pretty good idea which ones are the bad guys and which ones are the rebels).
BioShock Infinite is set to launch across the globe on March 26th, for the PS3, 360, and PC. More info on the highly anticipated game can be found here.
