Epic Games and NCSOFT have reached a long-term deal to obtain the licenses to use the newest version of the Unreal Engine in upcoming titles. NCSOFT has been utilizing the Unreal Engine since the Unreal Engine 2, with which they landed their first mega success in Lineage II, a game that has been popular for the past decade in Korea. The success continued with the release of Blade and Soul, which has quickly become the new favorite MMO of Korea, built using the Unreal Engine 3.
This partnership will remain a huge asset to the company, one that has been innovative in a world of what has been a sink-or-swim genre since the release of World of Warcraft. The licensing agreement will be handled though Epic Games Korea. Ray Park, territory manager for Epic Games Korea, said that “with Unreal Engine 4 in their hands, NCSOFT is set to redefine MMORPG success all over again.”
With this announcement, surely NCSOFT will be following up with some details on new projects associated with the licensing deal. I am sure many are waiting with baited breath for a ‘resurrection of Lineage III‘ announcement using the new engine, but we will just have to wait and see.
