EA announces change in leadership

Wow, that was quick. In a not-so-surprising turn of events, EA has announced that John Riccitiello will step down as Chief Executive Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors, effective March 30th. Larry Probst has been appointed the Executive Chairman to ensure a smooth transition while the Board searches for a replacement CEO.

I knew someone was going to get fired over the SimCity disaster, but I kind of didn’t expect the CEO of EA was that guy. This decision was probably not made solely on the SimCity debacle, but it sure as hell had a lot to do with it. EA also hasn’t been everyone’s favorite videogame company in the past few years, so a change of leadership was inevitable. Here’s a link to the full press release.

Update: It looks like John Riccitiello stated the ‘official reason’, which is basically that he hasn’t done a good enough job of making the company money. Well… that tends to happen when you piss off your customers!
